The problem; according to 2015 Sierra Leone national census 300 000 people living in this community including men women and children and about 300 house hold do not have access to safe water and sanitation facilities further more it is estimated that over 1 000 people still practice open defecation in field plastic bags river lakes and some source of drinking water.
It is also estimated that almost 500 people do not have washing facilities with soap.
There is proof that is a direct relation between wash and health of the community and individuals. Unsafe water and inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices can have issues on the health of the people most likely the children between 1 year to 5 years.
Children die almost every day of diarrhea due to lack of appropriate WASH facilities. Lumley health facility reports that over 55% of diseases are attributed to limited access to inadequate sanitation and hygiene services in Lumley community Freetown Sierra Leone.
With the information above it clearly shows the need to establish a sustainable model for WASH to improve the existing situation. The overall objective of the project is to successfully establish and demonstrate a sustainable model for improving water supply hygiene and sanitation in urban communities and some selected primary schools in the Lumley community.
The project will be launched in coordination with the local community and authorities.
